  This a good basic primer for either a social worker who has not done home heath before, a social worker who has done home health but knows little about how to perform the job, or for home health care administrators who do not know the functions of social work in home health (which there are way too many of as noted by the author). The book, however, is written in a format that reminds me of a workshop presentation. Lots of bullets, and unfortunately a lot of duplication. The problem I had with the book can be found in Chapter 7, "Medicare Standards for Social Work..." The author presents a lot of incorrect information regarding this (i.e. will reimburse for SW services for only 2 to 4 visits.) This is an intermediary's interpretation, not a Medicare Standard of even a HCFA interpretation. Her step by step approach SW referral and documentation is useful; however, it should not be under the heading of "Medicare Standards" since there are a multitude of other ways to do the same thing. This is just a couple of examples, there are many more. Lastly, this book seems to becoming a little bit out of date. With Prospecive Payment System (PPS)coming into the Home Health Care market, some of what is in this book will not be relevant (especially Medicare's attempts to control cost by controlling visits, which was needed under a fee for service arrangement but not under PPS). Finally, there is little mention whatsoever of social work intervention under manage care. This is becoming half of the patient population in Home Health Care, and nothing was mentioned about how to interact with manage care companies in home health. Still if you can get around the presentation that seems to indicate there is only one right way of doing social work services in Home Health Care under the Medicare model, the book does have some usefulness.
