One of the reviewers remarked that the author is a nuts-and-bolts theorist, and this may actually describe this book best. If you know what you are looking for, this is a great book, the style of the author is enjoyable, and you will learn both solid-state theory basics and a whole lot of interesting new topics. You will find several standard topics explained extremely well, much better than in any other book at this level (at least to my knowledge); for instance local-field effects and the screening of the electron-phonon interactions. It is certainly an outstanding companion to a solid-state theory class, but may be confusing to a beginner. The only weakness I could find is the treatment of optical properties of solids, which should, to my mind, be done in the framework of reduced density matrices.
