Mayo Clinic Preventive Medicine and Public Health Board Review (Mayo Clinic Scientific Press) Review

I bought this book to assist me in studying for the preventive medicine board exam. I looked forward to its straightforward organization and hoped for a good balance of detail and overview.

Unfortunately, so far I've been a bit disappointed by several chapters. The chapters have been divvied up amongst various authors or groups of authors, and the level of detail varies from chapter to chapter, and sometimes from section to section within each chapter. Structurally, I like the book's approach, but the content leaves me wanting. Important details are missing that I consider key for board review. I recommend at least opening up the USPSTF, ACIP, and CDC MMWR and CDC-NPIN sites to annotate the book with more details as you read, and consulting several other sources.

I will update this review after the board exams and after I've made it through the entire book, but for now, I want to warn you with this sentence, taken directly from Chapter 6: "Travelers to malarial endemic areas should receive prophylactic treatment, USUALLY WITH CHLOROQUINE" (emphasis added by me). If you know a bit about malaria and travel medicine, you are likely horrified by that statement. I can't recommend a book that says this!
