I'm an Emergency Medicine specialist who found himself appointed as a rural county Medical Examiner because no one else would take the job. Nowhere in my medical training dis I have usseful training in deaths -- natural or unnatural -- until I got the job as ME, and then my "training" was from a urologist who had held the position for 35 years (learning by mistakes), and from every book I could get my hands on. No single book out there (that I've found) provides all the information needed by a rural (or even big city) ME, or ME investigator. There are a few courses on death investigation for medical personnel, but the costs -- both directly and in lost practice time -- are prohibitive. I've started developing our own intrinsic training program for medical death scene investigators using CDs and self-study, but admittedly have a lot of "holes" in my knowledge base. This spiral-bound booklet gives concise investigational information designed for law enforcement, but is nevertheless very hepful for the medical team (ME, ME investigator, Paramedics responding to a "dead body" scene) in identifying, collecting, and preserving evidence in death scenes which may be crime scenes. Sections of it are going to be "assigned reading" for the course we're building, and I think every medical professional who encounters death scenes should scan through and soak up the important and relevant stuff in here (about 20% of it is helpful to medical, but knowing about the other 80% helps us work more effectively with our law enforcement associates). A little expensive for the format (hence only 4 stars), but has some good information.
