When I heard that Vikki Brock was writing a doctoral dissertation on the history of coaching, I was astounded and delighted. Now that she has expanded that labor of love into a sourcebook, she has made a valuable contribution to this emerging profession. This is a long book. This is a comprehensive book. If you are a coach, teach coaching, or simply are interested in coaching, you will find the book surprisingly hard to put down. The book is both well-researched and well-written. It is over 400 pages, yet I read it cover to cover in two afternoons.
The book begins with a comprehensive overview of the theoretical roots of coaching, expanding on Stein's tree of coaching. Brock broadens the model to include the roots of various forms of coaching, including personal development, business, and wellness coaching. The second section, covering the evolution of coaching, includes all the early transmitters of coaching worldwide as well as a chapter distinguishing coaching from its root professions.
Brock moves on to outline coaching as a developing profession. Coaches reading this book will recognize many of the names and organizations that contributed to the growth of coaching. While discussing the evolution of organizations, she gives detailed explanations without falling into the trap of getting caught up in gossip or finger-pointing as she details some delicate transitions.
Following a detailed history of coaching's professional organizations, Brock describes evidence-based coaching, details emerging university-based programs and concludes with educated speculation about the future of coaching.
As current President of the International Association of Coaching, a former CoachVille instructor and program developer, charter attendee at CAM and former ICF member, as well as someone who used Brock's dissertation with my students at Teachers College and NYU, I can attest to how meticulous, accurate and useful Brock's research is. As an avid reader of books about coaching, I can tell you that this book is an excellent investment, a who's who of everyone you may have ever met in this field and just plain exciting to read. You deserve to own this book.
